    applying for DLA

I am in the process of filling in the forms to get DLA for John. Can anyone give me any hints on things to put/not put.

He's got Asperger's Syndome. Is hyperractive to sensory input,, that effects everything from what foods he will eat to what clothes he will wear, noises, sights, tastes. Has hypo-reactive vestibular procresses so wants to spin, kick, and run all the time. Has night terrors 1 or 2 times a month, but I have to be alert to them happening every night.

He's prone to anger and violent outbursts with little or no advance warning.
Needs supervision when out so that he doesn't wander off or injure someone else with his spinning and kicking.

I've asked the teacher at school for a letter.

Figured I would send a copy of his diagnosis letter and some of the paperwork from others who have assessed him.

    Anything else?

Right, a lot of those questions are the same but asked in a different way, so be careful with that.
Take a copy of the forms before you send them off.

The minutes things ...... like, how many MINUTES to clean his teeth etc (sheesh) you have to give the worst scenario you've had, eg, on the Thursday things may have been fine, but if he had a bad morning on the Friday this is the one they need to know about.

It's everything hun, how long it takes him to fasten buttons, how long to eat a meal, if he can use the cutlery to cut things up alone, the whole shebang. The more truthful the picture the better, and sadly that means dragging the pits and telling it like it is.

Definitely the paperwork you've mentioned would be a brilliant thing to include, as well as the statement on the back from a professional that works with him, his teacher is a brilliant one ...

Good luck with the forms, they do my head in.
Give me a holler if you think I can help in any way at all xxxxxx

Buttons? He refuses to wear clothes that button up more that the basic polo shirt.

No buttons or zips on trousers, have to cut all the tags out of shirts. Clothing he had no problem wearing one week is declared itchy or otherwise not write the next and he refuses to ever wear again.

I'm going to work on these forms again probably Monday. I have to do a bit of work, then step away for a while. It is all just so negative in focus.

Yes it is, I end up being in a strange mood for days afterwards. I usually make notes throughout the period in between the forms as things with DS change.
He had a phase of going through no buttons etc, he was terrified they would stick and he'd be in his clothes forever!
Everything that goes above and beyond the call of parenthood needs to go on that form, it was trickier when he was smaller as opposed to now, as he's 16 I am his 'appointee' and all of a sudden things are clearer as to how behind he is in a lot of every day aspects; whereby when they're a child you double question everything.

Take it one stage at a time, the form is designed to 'trip you up'. Take copies of every page once it's done and collate as much extra evidence as possible, in case it's needed.

DS is given DLA in stages of 3 years .... his next claim will be in 2011 as I had to do this darling form again in June

And have a bottle of your favourite drink handy for when the declaration is finally dated and signed

I would honestly say it's worth applying for it now hun he's already been diagnosed, you're waiting to see what all the angles on his condition are, but the diagnosis is there xx

    ooo cool thank you Laura.

Clairey -- get on the mailing list with the National Autistic Trust -- they have courses and seminars around the country for parents of kids with ASDs. DH and I went to one together back last month and it was well worth the time.
