    Been Diagnosed

I haven't been on for a while. Been going through a diagnosis as to why Ryan doesn't talk and eat and sleep and in May the consultant decided it was Autism. It's not what we expected and I'm ashamed to say it put me and dh in a bad place for a while, but we've come out the other side and have accepted Ryan as he is and just take things one day at a time. Just wanted to share really.

Are you in touch with all the professionals etc? My friend's son has also just been diagnosed and is in touch with both health and children's services people who he says are being great.

Yeah in touch with everyone now. When he first got diagnosed I just kind of shut everyone out and refused all help. Crazy I know but finding it all easier to deal with now I've accepted it

No, not crazy at all Laura

It can hit you hard if you're not expecting it, and I think it's only natural to withdraw from the world, be angry, and think 'why us?'.

Once you do accept the situation then things can only look up from there.
Keep us updated on everything hun, and rant away in here if you need to

hopefully now you have a diagnosis & care & support around you you can get into some routine etc, think taking each day at a time is a good idea

I've heard the NAS are great - run courses to help you understand and cope better with one to one support. It is hard to accept the child you thought you had is different.

My son was diagnosed 2 years ago, his behaviour has improved, he still have a speach and language disorder but he is making a lot of progress. I didn't really feel i was supported, the specialist give you directions and you have to work i very hard at home on your own as the child would not always cooperate. We did what we could and we are still doing what we can. We find a huge improvement when he started to go to his nursery on full time, the nursery staff have been the most helpful and supportive.
I believe it improves while the child is growing, keep talking to him in a simple way, spend a lot of time with him, involve him in your daily routine, cooking, housework, gardening... and talk to him about what you are doing, he will learn a lot.
    Your son can get betterxx
