    New here-dd has ADHD

    Hi there,
Am new to this site and thought I'd say hello.
I am mum to dd age 8yrs who's recently been diagnosed with ADHD.
We have started her on medication-she is on 20mg of Equasym XL daily and seems to be doing ok on it-the changes are not dramatic but she certainly does have more ability to concentrate during the day.
Her impulsive, silly behaviour is much better whilst on the medication but as soon as it wears off it is back again.
Just wandered if anyone else has a child on this medication and if so wander if our dose is right yet?
How do you know when the dose is right?
    Thanks,
    x

    Hiya Turkeychick, welcome to MO!

My DS, who's now 16, was diagnosed with ADHD a long time ago now, and it took a while to sort out which medication would work as his was quite severe.

We've now got to the stage where he's on the right drug, and the right dose but it took a while. Do you have regular appointments at the hospital for reviews? What I did was write down when the drug wore off, and how he behaved/reacted, sort of like a diary, and took this with me.
I still do it as old habits die hard!

If you have no regular follow up appointments in place, then contact your GP if you have any concerns who will probably refer you on from there

Thanks for your message-at the moment we are just in contact with her Paed every couple of weeks to let her know how it's going-she had 3 weeks on 10mg's and we've had 1 week on 20mg's.
I am able to feed back to the Paed but she did say that her meds would wear off at around 4pm and then we are dealing with the silly, impulsive behaviour until bedtime.
Not had any feedback from her teachers yet-as last week school was closed for 4 days-so will pop in later this week to find out?

    Good idea

If her behaviour is really intolerable after 4pm, then I would definitely tell her consultant, as there may well be more they can do.
I would say that the dose will probably be reviewed at the next appointment, they have to 'up the level' slowly to avoid side effects as much as they can

Let me know what the school says, by what you say her behaviour should have improved during school hours, if only a little at the moment.
