scotopic sensitivity syndrome - Coloured lenses for kids

Has anybody got any first hand experience of the use of coloured lenses with dyslexic children or asperger children, I am looking at getting my two youngest assessed, but as the opticians who does it is a long way away, wouldn't mind some advice from others.

How much did testing cost, how much were the glasses?

    Thanks in advance
    Caroline

yes you do mean Irlen's syndrome.
I taught 2 children with this last year.
Have you got overlays for books to be going on with until you can get glasses?
Whereabouts in W Yorks are you?

The only ones I have found in the "area" are Leeds or Castleford, so both a responable distance.

Off Topis, My other half grow up in Pudsey.

SpecSavers offer this service. When we went for testing it cost £17 for the initial test. Then you are given a set of coloured overlays(£25) to try over a three month period. When you have selected the overlay that makes a significant difference, the lens is then tinted at a cost of £75-£100.
    SpecSavers call this service ColourOmetryTesting.

BUT if you ask your GP to refer you to the orthoptic clinic and ask to be seen by the reading specialist.
The test and overlays are then issued free and the prescription for the tinted lenses are covered by the NHS voucher.

Dont expect miracles. The overlays work for some children but a combination of Dyslexia and Aspergers can mean that the desired outcome is not always acheived.

    HTH.
