    tipis in the garden

OK, think I have found what I need to cover my tipi! Cotton canvas dust sheets. Possibly then given some sort of waterproofing wash. So I thought I would start a new thread and ask if anyone else has made a big tipi in the garden or something similar, I mean the next step up from bamboo canes and an old bedspread!

(pasted from Bank Holiday thread) No joy getting [10 foot] poles from the saw mill, he was of the opinion that I would not get anything that long, any thinner than a fence post sort of size and though coppiced hazel would be what I wanted he didn't think it would come that long. Although I found a website www.woodnet.org.uk offering coppice products of suitable length, but all down south... However have spoken to our nature reserves manager today who thinks he will have some alder coppice that will yield something suitable!

My other idea was a yurt and found this website which promises very small ones: www.yurtsandsqurts.com , but they are so busy with festivals they have taken off the price list and won't be taking any orders til September!

Last weekend, in the rain, went to visit a lovely customer who has a wood, hauled out ten ten-foot poles, then brought them home lashed to the roof rack. Got some heavyweight dust sheets, washed them to pre-shrink, got them dry somehow and have been sewing together to make the cover the right shape and putting some eyelets in... Have more sewing ahead of me to make fixings to attach cover to poles, something with bungies and toggles I think, not easy as I only have a little hand-cranked Singer and the cover is about 8 foot by 16 foot and only just fitted through the machine when I was sewing down the middle of it! Thank goodness DS2 enjoys turning the crank for me.

Yes that's what the man in the outdoor shop said but he was out of stock because everyone had been doing their marquees! But the a stuff he recommended (Cottonproof?) can be painted on so I don't have to stuff it all back in the washing machine, at least.

I have guilty pangs if I go into a shop and ask about something and then go away and order it online...
