High blood pressure at 36 weeks - 3 weeks on , it is ....!

My brother's girlfriend is due 3 weeks on Sunday but have found out she was admitted last night with high blood pressure. Have texted my brother this morning but according to the message from my mum he would be visiting her so mobile is probably switched off.

Does this necessarily mean Pre Eclampsia and if her bp doesn't go down after a period of time(how long would they monitor it first) might they induce or section her prior to 37 weeks ?

I know I've had 2 myself but fortunately avoided this so feel v ignorant. They've already had lots of ups and downs along the way so fingers crossed please.

I was admitted at the end of my first pregnancy with high blood pressure, but I didn't have any protein in my urine so they weren't too worried about pre-eclampsia.

I don't think high blood pressure would necessarily mean pre-eclampsia so they might just want to keep an eye on it, did she have any protein in her urine do you know?

    Hi Liz,

I had High BP in late pregnancy with both my girls, with Grace I was admitted as I also had protien in my urine and severe swelling in my hands and feet, I did have "The Onset of pre-eclampsia" and was closely monitored, but nothing ever came of it, and I delivered as planned at 39 weeks via elective C-sec due to Breech presentation.

With Lilah, my BP seemed to creep up and up through out my pregnancy, and again I was VERY swollen, and at 1 point did have protien in my urine, I was monitored again but they were not concerned this time as my BP wasn't quite as high.

It could be she has just overdone it and will need to rest.

Hope she is better soon x

you hae to have 3 symptons for it to be classed as pre-eclampsia
i had it with ds1 and was induced at around 37 weeks

had high bp all through preg with ds2 and was closely monitored but never had any other symptom

others sypmtoms to watch for are:
    protein in urine
    oedema

hmm, I feel very ignorant of this too, I had dangerously low bp through both my pregancnies, like bubs is now, Mum won't let her go anywhere too far on her own!!!

I'd not be desperately concerend unless there were the other symptoms, like Mav and the others have said.

    for you all

Had a message to say she's had urine and blood tests and they're waiting for the dr.

Raised bp in late pregnancy can be something and nothing. Worst case scenario is pre eclampsia but often it is what is called pregnancy induced hypertension (PIH) which does occasionally need treating with drugs to control the BP and as long as things are kept under control the pg will be allowed to continue to term.
If it is pre eclampsia then how soon she delivers depends on how bad the condition is. The blood results combined with urine and BP readings will give a good picture as to what is going on as will the fetal heart monitoring. If the results showed that things were not as they should be then they would certainly deliver before 37 weeks.
Fingerscrossed it is nothing to worry about, more often than not it is PIH, not PET, it sounds like she's being checked out thoroughly. Let us know what your brother says about the results
