Sunday trading
Requirements for large shops on Easter Sunday and Christmas Day
As well as complying with restrictions on opening hours on normal Sundays, large stores of more than 280 square metres (3,000 square feet) mustn't open on:
Easter Sunday (except Scotland)
Christmas Day
Small shops are free to open when they choose on these days.
There are significant fines for failing to comply with these requirements.
So, they can only open if they're not too big. Tesco Express etc are all ok, the larger ones closed.
It's always been the rules on Sundays, the rules really only ever applied to large stores, even with the limited opening hours. Doesn't apply to smaller shops which is why the smaller corner shops have always been able to open late even on Sundays. I guess you have to draw the line somewhere, and smaller shops can be handy for emergencies.
I know ! if there's no horse racing on they do computer horse racing(like the ones you can get on dvd i think) people must be desperate to lose money if they bet on that!
I thnk somewhere along the line people got real and decided god didn;t really give a monkeys if shops were open or not and anyway as a non christian it's proberly against my rights not to be able to shop on a christian festival day or somesuch nonsense even though I couldnt give 2 hoots personally as I hate shopping anyway.
I am ace and I live in space.
