    Sara-Grace Birth Story

Well now I have my head more or less as back on as it's gonna get I thought I'd write this up while it's all still very fresh in my mind.

The night of the 6th Jan I had a very unsettled night feeling very low and fed up, a lot of thoughts spinning round re grandma too so it was about 3-4am on the 7th before I went to bed.

I tossed and turned even more once in bed and had a few niggles that stirred me from my sleep but not enough to make me think anything was happening in anyway.

I woke up with back ache 11am ish in the end, I sat in bed a while when for some reason I shot outta bed declaring to DH that I wasn't comfy and HAD to get up, still not twigging by this point just what was starting.

Just as I reached the bottom of the stairs I started to feel water moving but honestly thought to myself that I had just got an overly full bladder cos I forgot to go before bed n baby was laying low down and pressing on it. That was until I got to the bathroom when the 1st contraction gripped along with more fluid loss, after using the loo.

DH must have known cos he took 1 look at me when I came out the bathroom and said are we getting started then before I even mentioned what had just happened, so I said I'm not hoping too hard just yet but I think so. 10 Mins later and every 10 mins for half an hour I had a contraction and more water loss so I called the on call MW team to explain what was what.

1pm and the 1st mw arrived, a lady called Pat, she was really nice, I explained what was happening and had happened since getting up, she did my bp pulse etc and suggested an internal which I accepted, I was still contracting 10 mins apart dwindling occasionally to 15 mins at times but definately was on the right track. The internal showed I was definately losing my hind waters and I was 3 cm but she could stretch my cervix to 5 so yes we were doing as we should be.

Although mild the contractions kept coming, babys heart rate was stable my bp, pulse etc was all fine too. Pat re did an internal at 4pm as she was due to finish at 5pm so she needed to assess what was happening so she knew whether to send for 1 or 2 new mw's to take over. I was 5cm dilated, contractions were coming more like every 8 minutes and were starting to actually hurt. With that internal I also had a bloody show, more water loss, only it was the fore waters starting to go too this time. She decided to send for 2 midwives rather than just 1 as she has her suspicions I'd be delivering by 7-8pm ish. At that time I wasn't fussed I was managing the contractions fine baby was happy etc so long as we were all ok and progressing fine.

5.20pm ish and Jillian turned up to take over from Pat, things were getting more intense now, contractions every 6 mins more or less and definately more painful, still I carried on with no pain relief, hadn't even wanted my tens machine on, I figured while I was coping fine as was why bother.

By 5.45pm Janey the 2nd midwife joined us and Pat handed over wishing us well. My contractions were coming every 4 mins by 6.15pm and I was beginning to get a bit tetchy, I knew we were getting close so a sudden flurry of sheets towels and organising and I was on the floor on my knees cos I couldn't sit any longer and was starting to feel like I was getting ready to push.

Still battling with contractions that suddenly bombarded thick and fast and carried on with no pain relief cos that was as I wanted it, by 6.45pm I knew this baby was on it's way well and truely, I kept thinking over and over in my head that "he" would be here any minute now, don't know why I kept thinking that but I did! 6.50pm came faster than I thought it did and I needed to push, 3 big painful pushes over 5 minutes and baby was here 6.55pm, Daddy was the 1 to reveal gender to me, I was on my knees leaning against the sofa so I couldn't see, He looked at me all teary eyed and told me it was another girl. It wouldn't have mattered to either of us what gender baby was but I was thrilled it was a girl cos my nan had said to me she hoped for another Great Granddaughter.

I had the injection to bring on the placenta, which I delivered in tact at 7.03pm.

Sara-Grace took straight to feeding like a pro and we were all cleared up sorted and having a well earned cuppa by 7.45pm!!! The midwives left us to settle down at 8.30pm.

It was just as we wanted and the end result has brought such a positive start to 2007 for us all she is a truely special little lady.

Sara-Grace Purdy Frances, born 6.55pm on Sunday 7th Jan 2007 weighing 7lb and 1/2 an oz

    How perfect Kirsty.

I had considered a home birth for ds2, but had a low lying placenta for a lont of my pregnancy so I was booked in to hospital, as it was, I almost delivered him at home anyway!!!
