In my last school some staff were trained - TAs, support admin and also some teachers. Not everyone was able to be trained due to the cost element involved with training. I would have happily done the training but as a PTer it would not have been viable cost effective for me to go on the training. We did not have a nurse based on site. The school was also spaced out on a biggish site, in 4 seperate buildings. Most classrooms did not have telephones, although my IT rooms did.

I for one could not stand by and do nothing. If in such a situation I would first try and contact someone - sending some other pupils to get help, but if necessary I would do whatever I needed to do.

I can't imagine any judge in this country finding against an individual who tried to give life saving treatment if there was no alternative. They may however sue the school or LEA for not providing enough staff with the necessary training to cover all eventualities.

This type of training should be essential for anyone who has sole responsibility for children for any length of time TBH. I think teachers should have a hell of a lot more training, not just in this but in all manner of other types of special needs for their pupils.

I was also not allowed to give out tablets, such as paracetemol, to pupils - which makes sense. But to me emergency life saving treatment comes under an entirely different category.

    Very eloquently put DSW.

There are varying degrees of sensitivity with nut allergy and all it takes is a bit of care, concern and awareness to potentially save a life

every staff member at my school has had epipen training. TAs, admin, teachers, dinnertime staff. Everyone.
We have 2 children in school with severe nut allergies. Their photos are up in several locations so that people know they have the allergy.
I would administer the epipen without a second thought.
