    Question peanut allergies

i wanted to know if mums with children who have peanut allergies were told by the midwife or doctor not to eat peanuts while pregnant! i am asking as i have 4 children the eldest being 16 and the youngest being 9 and i was never told not to eat peanuts while pregnant and so i ate them pretty much through each pregnancy and my children didnt develope any allergies to nuts. i am now just pregnant and have been told not to eat peanuts as there is something in them that can cause miscarrage or to have a baby with a nut allergie. it seems that over the last 10 years more and more children are born with nut allergies and i am wondering if it is because over the last 10 years midwifes and doctors have been telling pregnant mums not to eat peanuts is it coincidence that this is happening or is it just lifestyle of mums now.

I had my first child 10 years ago and my forth is nine months old and yes what you are told now is completely different to what people were told years ago. I know various people who have eaten nuts whilst pregnant and there not been any problem. Whilst i was pregnant with my last child i did eat the odd peanut but made sure i didnt go ott and eat the whole packet just one or two occassionally. I do think that as with many of these things, like my mother said "it never did me any harm" Certain things are frowned upon by the medical profession but at the end of the day its your baby and your body, and you should do what you want to do. Take the advice on board but make you own decision. yes there may be a correlation between advice given and allergies going up.

All advice changes all the time doesn't it. Basically they say you can sensitize unborn babies and under 5s to peanuts and because those with an allergy to them can have such a severe reaction (anaphalactic shock) the advice is to avoid them when pregnant and not to give to young children. As to the research that led them to believe this, I have no idea.
