Question Teaching your child to read?

    Hello,

Just wondering if anyone has taught their child to read, or if you've just let it evolve naturally? If you have taught them, have you used a specific reading program such as Jolly Phonics and would you recommend it?

    Thanks very much,
    September

No we have just continued on what they were taught at school. DS learned with Oxford Reading Scheme and Jolly Phonics, DD is starting Read Write Inc and Jolly Phonics.

Can i recommend you visit my website, where you will find a range of Jolly Phonics items. My DD was taught with Oxford Reading Tree. She love the characters, Floppy, Biff, Chip and Kipper.

Thanks very much, i'll have a look at those. I think i'd prefer to be doing some reading with her - i can't get my head around how she would teach herself, although i know children who have.

How did you get on with all of this September?

I only ask as I am currently in the same position with Sofie. She is desperate to learn to read, and so far we have been muddling on with me teaching her letters and sounds as she asks, and her sounding out some (very) basic words occasionally. But tonight she asked me when she would learn to read 'properly'.

So I have now decided it would help both of us to try and take a more structured approach. So far I am leaning towards Jolly Phonics to teach the letter sounds, followed by the Oxford Reading Tree Songbirds books as first readers.

Thoughts on this anyone? Particulary from those with children leaning to read.

I got her a set of Bob books, and the Horizons Reading workbooks and she is now reading really well
As we're homeschooling we decided to get the full Horizons curriculum and it's fab - she loves it and is doing really well. http://www.aophomeschooling.com/horizons/overview.php
