Well, we're home and we had the most amazing time. Our resort was in the middle of nowhere, at the end of the peninsula (? sticking outy bit) that is Samana in the Dominican Republic. It was really child-friendly, there was food and drink on tap and the beach was gorgeous and calm and shallow! And the pool was excellent as well. There weren't all that many people there, so there was none of that rushing to bag a sunbed in the sun/shade depending on what we felt like that day.
We did 3 day trips - visited Santo Domingo, which is the capital and the oldest city in the Americas apparently. We did a jeep safari into the mountains, to see the 'real' Dominican Republic which included someone's home (tiny) and a school (also tiny but soooooo sweet! The kids were lovely). And we also did a trip to a national park by catamaran which is basically a bunch of islands where only birds live.
The first week we basically slept and rested, we were so exhausted, so I'm so glad we did take 2 weeks. I feel so much better now and ready to face whatever's about to happen next - fingers crossed for us that things can only get better from here!!! But even if there is more crap, I feel so much more energised and able to deal with it!!!
