Things to do in Scottish Borders, in October

We are going to stay in thje Scottish Borders for half term, near a village called St Boswells, not far from the A68.

We includes me, DH, Mollie (9y), Katz and her DH and their two girls (9y and 6y). We have rented a house and will have cars. Don't mind doing some driving to places but don't want to spend all our time in cars as we want a fairly relxaing break too.

We are planning on doing a day to Edinburgh - anyone know which the nest park and ride would be from our side?

Mollie would like to go to Alnwick castle to see where Harry Potter used to be set. Not been for years and years - anyone been? Recommend or not?

I think the girls would like to go to Holy Island and watch the tide come in/out. Mollie really enjoyed that last year especially watching the cars that only just make it back in time!

Sadly I think a trip to Forbidden Corner is too far really.

Anywhere else you could suggest? Especially if the weather is wet and horrible!

We took the kids last year and they loved it. As well as the tour of the castle itself, they had lots of kids activities to do in the courtyard - they let you pick an outfit (princess or knight) and then go around the activities. I have no idea if this is all year round.

Is she into Romans yet? It's been many years since we went, but our kids loved Vindolanda.
Roman Vindolanda and Roman Army Museum, Hadrian's Wall, Northumberland National Park
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
    We will remember them.

She says they have done Romans at school - she's home with me as was off school ill - so we will look at that too. To be fair all three girls quite like history.
