oh thank goodness, its not just mine....
he went, he stayed, he cried, he played, he cried some more, played some more, we came home
we are going next week
I've signed DS2 onto the waiting list for Beavers... one of the other mums told me this afternoon her husband went to pick their youngest up and heard the leader yelling at the Beavers to "shut up" and then say "are you taking the piss?"
Umm, not sure now whether it was a good idea...
You know what? I'm not surprised. I expect the leader had had enough. As an ex-beaver leader myself I can completely empathise. Although I never went as far as to tell them all to shut up (let alone the rest) I can imagine it's not a difficult step to make. I had 16 chilcdren to manage through a programme that I devised (with on-line guidance) with 3 on the night helpers. Approx 1/4 of these children were lovely - wanting to learn & work towards their badges. The rest were awful. I'm sorry but that's the way it was - Unruly children with no respect. The way I saw it was that school offered them some structure then the parents would bring them to Beavers with the knowledge that we would enhance their educational and social skills, sounds great. In fact, most children saw it as a place to let off steam and go wild. A complete nightmare for the untrained child worker like myself. That's why I gave it up. So, spare a thought for these adults giving up their time (approx 12 hours a week for me) to try and do something for their community. My advice to those parents wanting to get their children involved in scouting is to get involved themselves.
