Can someone explain school years to me?

I am so confused now. I have always been confused about whether DD1 is in class R (reception) or year 1. I think she is in class R which I found out is key stage 2 last week. I think. But in the newsletter, it keeps referring to FS2 - foundation stage 2? And what does that mean? And why does she not start at year 1? And what then is key stage 2? Gah.

If someone could explain this all to me in simple language, like, I would be most grateful. This is her first year at school, she'll turn 5 within the school year.

    Thanks!!

Yr 1 and Yr2 are all key stage 1

    Yr3-6 are key stage 2

Yr7 is keys tage 3 after that I'm not sure.

In Yr then end it being 5, Yr1 they reach 6 Yr2 7 and so on.

Early years and foundation stages have recently changed AFAIK, so I am not sure about those, I think foundation stages are up to the end of Yr R, foundation starts at pre-school (assuming here, might be way off)

Key stage one properly starts in Yr 1.

Thats unless you have held your child back a year.

So Your DD is still in foundations stage if she's still in reception. VEry much play based learning, role play, choosing time etc, with the fast track phonics scheme along side.

In our school, Foundation stage would cover Nursery and Reception Classes.
Key Stage One would be Y1 and Y2.
Key Stage Two would be Y3 - Y6 (Junior School).
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
    We will remember them.

So it's foundation stage 1 (nursery aged about 3-4)
Foundation stage 2 (year R aged about 4-5)
Key stage 1/year 1 (aged about 5-6) and so on?

Why all the 2 names though for each year? And why has no-one in the school bothered to explain it to parents, just put a newsletter out expecting us to know what they mean? Grrrr

Thanks for the explanation though. Was it this complicated when we were at school?

to above . She is currently Reception which is the last year of Foundation Stage(Age 3-5 approx) . You should have a review against the same learning goals as for preschool/nursery. KS1 starts at Year 1 until end Year 2 (5-7years old), at which point there may be SATS to assess her progress but marked internally. Some schools have mixed classes within KS1 - with some year 1's and some year 2's. KS2 is Years 3-6 (roughly 7-11years old) with more SATS at end of Year 6, externally marked . dc school opts out of SATS and uses PIPS and CATS instead.

we have FS1 (pre school / nursery)
FS2 (start age 5 i suppose was called reception)
    Year 1 and Year 2
    Years 3 - 6.

FS2,Yr 1 and 2 are called Key Stage 1. (infants school in our days)
Years 3-6 is Key Stage 2 (juniors)
Secondary school is Years 7- 11.

It was so much easier when it was just infants and juniors!

I am presuming she is one of the ones in FS2 then. Apparently there is a parents' evening for FS2 children at the beginning of March, but no other parents' evenings.
