Thread: Individual Education Plans

I'm having a week full of them!

Thomas has had one for a couple of years, he's struggled with his literacy. Today I got a letter saying they think he's made considerable progress and no longer needs one, so I'm really relieved about that, and proud of him because he's put so much effort in.

On the other hand, yesterday I had a meeting with Leo's teacher who's decided he needs to have one, as she believes he's not doing as well with phonics as he could be. Leo is 4 and has been in reception for 5 months, and already they're doing this? I mean I suppose it's good they keep and eye on these things, but I can't help thinking reception is a bit early for all this....

I don't know what they are Gemma?

Is it the same twunter of a teacher that was so horrible about Thomas and how he held a pen?
Am feeling urge to come over and slap her again!!

DS1 has had IEP's since reception as he's always been more delayed than his peers. While it may seem very early it could be a good thing that they are looking out for him and giving him help early on in areas that he's not so strong in and hopefully like Thomas, he won't need one anymore in a couple of years

It's good! Much worse is when they put off these things, and then the intensive catch up teaching and carefully targeted support only arrives in year 4......by which time they have noticed they are behind their peers, and say 'well, I'm thick' 'but I can't read' etc

Very good that they are already 'on it'... probably because of his big brothers pattern of learning.

It is never too early to put an IEP in place IMO, in the reception class that I work in we have them and I work with the children on them, the one to one help that they get helps them an awful lot. The sooner they are put in place then the sooner they catch up.

Early intervention is the key.

And I will keep saying it until it happens for every needy child.

Agree; the sooner the better, top marks to your school for being on the ball!

DS had one all the way through his school years, and that has helped him complete nearly two years of college, as they have something similar they offer, so long as there was an IEP in school.
